Kentucky 77 Houston 70

Kentucky was able to hold on for the win despite a great effort from Houston. Kentucky jumped out to an impressive early lead, but they were unable to sustain the large margin for very long. Houston's speed and ability to drive to the basket and pass to open shooters gave UK tons of problems. It was very similar to the way Memphis beat Kentucky back in November. The difference this time was that Houston had no interior game.

Kentucky's problems started when they quit going inside to Morris who was able to dominate down low and instead settled for 3 pointers. UK shot 30 3's on the night and just 36 2's. Part of that was caused by the zone that Houston played, but many times it appeared that UK didn't even try to get the ball down low. Houston didn't shoot well, but were able to get up 75 shots including 34 3's. This is exactly the kind of game that Kentucky needs to stay away from. The focus should be on getting the ball to Morris, penetrate with Jasper, Meeks, and Crawford, and let the 3's come as a result of that kind of play. Thankfully UK was able to hold on tonight, but the result could have just as easily been a loss.

Positives & Negatives:

Morris: 20 pts, 10-12 FT, 10 reb, 4 blks, 3 ast - Continues to be so steady and dominate; was able to pass out of double teams and create for others.
Meeks: 8 pts, 9 reb (6 offensive) - played very big down the stretch with a rebound off a missed freethrow and then converted a 3 point play.
Jasper: 12 pts, 6 ast, 3 reb - able to score inside due to height advantage.
Thomas: 5 pts, 7 reb, 2 ast - rebounded when it seemed like nobody else could hold onto the ball.
Bradley: 11 pts, 7 reb, 2 ast - shot just 3-10 on 3's; settled for the 3 too much.
Crawford: 10 pts, 4 reb, 4 ast - at his best when he penetrates and pulls up for the mid-range jumper.
Perry: 8 pts, 6 reb, 2-11 FG, 0-4 3's; the 8 pts. and 6 reb. are fine, but needs more consistent shooting.
Woo, Porter, Stevenson: combined for just 11 minutes; Woo is doing a good job backing up Morris, but Stevenson has gone MIA.

Team:

Positive: 48-36 rebound advantage, 19 ast. on 26 FG, just 10 turnovers, defense held Houston to 36% FG, 32.4% 3FG

Negatives: 39.4%FG, 26.7% 3FG, Forced just 8 turnovers
